Popular social networking site Facebook has partnered with web security firm Websense to make the platform safer than ever before.
Websense, an email and data security solutions provider, will effectively visit hundreds of millions of pages on users' behalf, and conduct tests for cyber threats like botnets, malware, Trojans and phishing attempts.
The web security firm will check every link against its massive database, and if it finds the link is malicious, it will alert the users about the potential threat.
The user can click on the link even after the warning, but only at his/her own risk.
The development has been welcomed by many, who have criticized Facebook for its allegedly slow response to cyber threats. In september, cyber criminals posted fake news claiming that Lady Gaga had died and prompted users to visit a malicious website.
At that time, British security firm Sophos’ Graham Cluley had suggested, “Facebook needs to work much harder to prevent attacks like this from reoccurring and spreading so rapidly.”
Facebook is the world’s most popular social networking site, with more than 750 million registered users across the world.
